The World Through Two Glass Windows

Jul. 25th, 2007 | 01:31 pm
mood: blank blank

Through one window, sleek bombs of screaming water droplets could be seen hitting the ground- beautiful clear lakes in miniature set on the driveways and pathways right outside the door. It was dark outside, and yet no fear was instilled into the amazed eyes of those watching from within the dry safety of 1111 Westchester Drive. One could go so far as to say that you could see the still green grass drinking the new life from the heavens.

But there was another window, and when it settled over the first it covered the world with unpenetratable fog- from within. That world which would have normally held no fear became the subject of a paralyzing, awesome terror. "Where is the world now?" The inhabitants of the house would wonder.

Every time that second window would drift away just long enough for one to glimpse what was really happening, its entire frame would creep eerily back into place with a light taping scrape- the sound of someone trying to enter the house.

No living creature would dare leave for the fear of… what? A flash briefly blinded the sky, scorching the window in dim white. A shadow appeared in the window, and within the split second that the lightning had come and gone, so too had the shadow left.

One of the houses bodies shivered and drew closer within the building, away from the door. It curled into a dull colored blanket. Weary eyes blinked for certainty. The creature couldn’t bring itself to stop gazing outside of the window.

The rains pounding became more intense, leaving rhythm behind for a full onslaught of cold, merciless drumming- into the house, the ground, and the rattling leaves. Lightning was out cried by thunder, and the leaves echoed anger in its blast. At this point another drop would have turned the sky into a water fall; and then it stopped. Dripping gently, the water found temporary peace.

Silhouettes came suddenly, wavering before the door, wavering and nothing more. Time was nearly still, but when it let itself breath again, the silhouettes would come closer and closer still. Finally, those figures, whatever owned those silhouettes, were within a centimeter of that second window- that horrible window that, in all its clarity, never once let a soul see clearly outside of it. Whatever thing was scarcely separated from those thin fragile windows was now standing breathing on the second.

Lightning struck again, and the rain struck harder, and only for an instant did the shape of the silhouette, of its mere outline, appear! And in that instant, what terror it did strike!

A scream from within the house and then… there was nothing. The very earth held its breath and waited its turn of eternity while the rain stopped in mid air, the very tension of that air levitating the life bearing drops away from the morbid and treacherous soil. A silence more deadly than poison shook the foundations of every soul within its reach, leaving only the clouds to cry still tears. And then, before realization, wind crept between the drops of water and sent them hurling down. Lightning flashed again, but left no silhouette.
